Comic Meets Gadgets: Oh how I should have been a plumber

by XXDave Rubin on Mar 7, 2006 at 08:26 PM

‘CMG’ is a column about a comics quest to conquer the tech world. Dave Rubin contributes ‘CMG’ to Gadgetell weekly. Read more of Dave’s musing at The Daily Dave.

MarioNintendo, which seems to have one mission these days, to end my gaming career, has just put another nail in my coffin. It’s new game, “Trauma Center: Under the Knife”, for the portable DS system, allows you to perform various medical procedures on patients. It’s actually a first in video games, a game where you are trying to save people, not kill them. Despite that lofty goal, I can assure you that my patience for saving the patient’s would be rather low. And my rate of yelling at the screen would be rather high.

Anyway, video games seem to always want to be more and more real, but a game where you play a doctor? What’s part two of this game going to be about? You get sued for malpractice because you rushed the operation so you could make your tee time? Then you have to become a virtual lawyer and defend yourself? Someone really needs to tell Nintendo to get back to making games about plumbers who eat mushrooms.

Oh, how I should’ve been a plumber.

Dave Rubin is a comedian and writer who has pitched shows to HBO, Showtime and Comedy Central. His cable access show, “The Anti Show” was secretly shot at NBC studios in New York. Dave lives with his gold fish, Fritz. Read more of Dave’s musing at The Daily Dave.

    Hey
Guess what? Like it or not, the DS and the Wii are ahead of the game. These new concepts that sad bloggers like you are too thick to try are working on millions of people around the world. It’s no secret, the PSP sucks because its games are simply PS2 clones, Sony Fanboys even admit it.
Now tell me, have you even tried this game? How about you look up its sales? Not very low are they? In my opinion, you are the obviously biased against Nintendo and I respect that because I am biased for them. Just keep some decent evidence next time you want to bad mouth the greatest gaming company in the world.

    Hi SkyPioneer -

I’m sorry, but maybe we are reading different stories.  Dave is not bashing Nintendo as a company or their sales figures on this game.  He is a comic commenting on the concept of the game, and states “I can assure you that my patience for saving the patient’s would be rather low”.  He never tells people not to buy it, or says it’s a terrible game.

I wouldn’t take what he says to heart - since as it says several times throughout the article - he’s a comedian.

    Thanks for the comment.

    No.
You where against the concept, and I explained, that this concept has worked on millions of people over the world.
You say that he’s a comedian? How is this funny? “Someone really needs to tell Nintendo to get back to making games about plumbers who eat mushrooms.”. Oh, I’m in stitches, from beating my head against the wall to take away the pain of this random reference to the Mario games.
I mean, c’mon. What kind of a low standard of comedy do you guys have? I found this page on Google and after reading the article, I had no clue that it was a comedian, just an angry little blogger trying to avenge himself of the rest of the world by wasting precious seconds of a game that he doesn’t even own. He’s not funny and neither is that random and unrelated picture from Super Mario Sunshine.
Another thing is that he never mentions that he is a comedian, not once. There is reference at the end, but really, who on earth bothers to read that? The article is over, I have no further reason to read on, unless I want to learn about Dave Rubin’s exciting career as a comical *COUGH!* blogger on a site with a page rank of six (link http://www.dailyserver.com/page_rank.php?gclid=CI25nYijw5ECFRIUagodOhYKCg).

No. He is not funny. He was bashing the system in a humorous way, although its hard to tell if there is any real humour in there at all.
