Celrun, a strong alternative to Apple TV

by Kian Henry on Feb 27, 2008 at 07:48 AM

Celrun TV

Celrun TV may not match Apple’s library and service, but this media streamer device looks awesome and has some impressive features under the bonnet. The 320GB hard drive should be enough to hold a vast collection of movies and programs. It has Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB, built-in Digital tuner as well as HDMI, component and optical audio for the connoisseurs of audiovisual entertainment.

It is compatible with almost every video file under the sun, such as AVI, MPEG1/2/4, DivX, ASF, XviD, OFF, FLAC, WAV, H.264, WMV just to name a few. Currently, there hasn’t been a release date or price confirmed yet, but I hope it makes it here soon.

Don’t forget that Media Center and its extenders are even better (hands down) than AppleTV

Tom B, reading your comment on Jaxim’s comment made me almost blow coffee out of my nose—nice.

Can AppleTV record TV programs? The only thing that AppleTV has that Windows Media Center does not is the ability to rent video directly from the manufacturer. However, when you can record TV programs and be able to rent video from 3rd party vendors like Netflix, this advantage is midigated.

Perhaps things will be different when Apple releases ApplyTV 3.0, but until then, Media Center is the winner here.

Media Center has some issues though.  Where are you keeping your big box it runs in?  My place isn’t networked for that, is yours?  Can the common Joe figure that out?

Apple TV and the ARCHOS TV+ are both nice units that make it easy for the avg person to make it work.  Media Center lacks that.

I am still waiting for a winner.  Back to you, Jaxim.
