Caricatures, animation can help identify criminals

by Colbert Low Boon Leng on Nov 29, 2007 at 03:16 PM

CaricaturesCaricaturesDo you know that caricatures and animations can also be used to catch criminals? According to a study by Dr Charlie Frowd, it shows that caricaturing and animating photofits can help improve and assist a higher recognition rates from 40 percent to 80 percent as compared to an ordinary photofit. With a more improved identification of criminals, this could be an important tool to assist the police. The technology will used by the Derbyshire Police beginning early next year.

“We found through our studies that different people need different levels of caricature to best recognize a face, so showing them an image as a series of caricatures - from caricature to anti-caricature - is the best way to improve recognition rates,” said Co-researcher Professor Peter Hancock, of the University of Stirling.
