The Azur 840W is a high end amplifier that retails for $1900. For those that know Cambridge Audio, it is the second generation Class XD which “is now complemented by a new output stage carefully adjusted to integrate with this novel technology, revised balanced inputs for lower distortion and noise.” The 840W Class XD power amplifier have been named as CES Innovation Awards Honorees and will be showcased in the Sands Expo & Convention Center/The Venetian Booth 70621.

For those of us that aren’t really aware of them here are the key features:

  • Second generation Class XD technology
  • Breathtaking 200W @ 8 Ohms and 500W into 8 Ohms bridged mono
  • Two pairs of very high current output transistors per channel in revised configuration for improved integration with Class XD
  • Twin rectifiers and separate transformer taps for dual mono operation of the left and right power amplifiers
  • Oversized low flux toroidal transformer with an enormous 1200VA power rating
  • Allows biamp or bridged mono modes
  • RCA and balanced XLR connections which are switchable from the rear panel
  • Cambridge Audio proprietary CAP5 protection system

For those of you that don’t know much about amplifiers this is probably all double Dutch to you, but for audiophiles amongst you the real power of the 840W is the crossover technology that it employs to ensure high quality performance at low levels, with a smooth transition to the higher levels. This is achieved through a oversized low flux toroidal transformer. High quality is further achieved through two pairs of high current transistors per channel. The end result? A very neat looking, powerful amplifier that will fit well in the mid to advanced audiophiles set up.
