Breaking: iPhone 2.0 “on the water”?

by JG Mason on Mar 26, 2008 at 09:48 AM

A quiet buzz is going around this morning after word of iPhone shortages are cropping up in NYC Apple stores.  Some sites are questioning if this is the sell-down prior to intro of the iPhone 2.0, as this method is right out of the Apple play book.  We see it with just about every iPod introduction.

The buzz builds with Digg founder Kevin Rose predicting iPhone 2.0 will have GPS and dual cameras.  Hmmm, his predictions have not always come to fruition.  Could a surprise introduction be happening next Tuesday?

I don’t buy it.  Apple isn’t dumb.  While AT&T stores still have inventory, Apple wouldn’t give the outward appearance that the iPhone 2 is imminent, threating sales of current products.  It is only March, June is a couple of months away.  No way is what we are seeing anything but an inventory glitch.  Someone is sitting in a cubical somewhere saying, “so I fixed the glitch”.

I don’t believe its a sign of 3G iPhone.  I’m actually getting a bit tired of this 3G being referenced constantly.  ATT for US doesn’t have a large amount of access for that network, last time I looked at the map.  Unless some announcement that ATT is deploying a massive 3G network, I don’t believe 3G iPhone will available this year.

There might now be significant 3G in the US but a 3g iphone this year in europe is vital, other large screen multi-function media ready phones are coming thick and fast all with 3g. iphone may be the best to use but its being held back in UK and other euro markets (and aisa). we will see 3g iphone i’m guessing a year after iPhone 1 was released

Thanks Alex and Slappy.  Fair points both.  Do you think Apple could launch a 3G iPhone in Europe and Asia where those markets have the 3G infrastructure and not launch it here?

I don’t think Apple could.  I think it will be across the boards and I think it will be this year before the holidays.  I don’t think we’ll see it in June.

    All in steps.  Small steps.

they could launch it worldwide, if it falls back to edge where there’s no 3G it would be at least as good as the iPhone1 at all times. i know loads of people here in UK waiting for 32GB&3G;iphone will sell very well i’m sure.

I think your right about right before the holidays.. Or perhaps Macwordl Expo.  Hmm I need to start saving up.  :-)

I don’t really think that many people are waiting for a 3G iPhone in the U.K.  I honestly don’t think British people want to pay so much for a handset.  They’re too used to subsidized handsets much cheaper than the iPhone.  I suppose they’re just frugal, is all.

I believe the shortage of iPhones in NYC is an inventory glitch.  No way could there be an iPhone shortage or a new model refresh.  We Apple fans really turn small things into major stories.  I’m sure late June will be the earliest introduction of a 3G iPhone.
