Blu-Ray will not be coming to the Xbox 360

by Arnold Zafra on Mar 13, 2008 at 10:16 AM

No Blu-ray for the Xbox 360

Microsoft finally ended the industry speculations on whether the Xbox 360 will be supporting Blu-ray technology or not. Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for the Xbox 360 told Reuters that Microsoft is negotiating with neither Sony nor the Blu-ray Association for a possible Blu-ray Xbox 360 integration.

Greenberg also said that the Microsoft Xbox 360 will continue its current Live online service which allow Xbox 360 fans to rent hundreds of movies online, which even include HD movies.

“We’re the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content,” Greenberg said.

Greenberg also expressed Microsoft’s confidence on the Xbox 360’s sales performance as compared to its fiercest rival, the Playstation 3. Despite getting outsold by the PS3 in the U.S. market for a couple of months already, Microsoft said that it has nothing to do with the Xbox 360 capability as good video game console. Greenberg attributed the slumping sales of the Xbox 360 to the supply constraints that the Xbox 360 is facing. This caused the console to trail the PS3 in sales trend for January and February.

But Greenberg believes that it will just be a matter of time before Xbox 360 regain its lead over PS3.  A good sign of the Xbox 360’s recovery is the coming of console gaming’s best title so far next month – Grand Theft Auto 4. This would definitely boost purchases of the Xbox 360. The problem though is that the game will also be coming to the Playstation 3 console as well. The fate of the Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will soon lie in the hands of its fans.

Sony really made the right choice in choosing to put the bluray player in thier system.  Microsoft struck out in choosing to have the hd-dvd player as an extension.  I’m not surprised they aren’t going to make a blu-ray extension.
