Blockbuster and Motorola partner to bring OnDemand movies to your phone

by Robert Nelson on Aug 19, 2009 at 06:22 AM

Blockbuster and Motorola partner to bring OnDemand movies to your phoneBlockbuster and Motorola have recently announced a partnership that will allow users to stream OnDemand movies to their phones.  The details are pretty light, however it was noted that the streaming will come in the form of a Blockbuster OnDemand application that will be made available for select Motorola phones.

“Through the agreement select Motorola phones will feature an exclusive BLOCKBUSTER OnDemand application, providing on-the-go download access to Blockbuster’s digital library of thousands of current BLOCKBUSTER OnDemand movies.”

Even with the lack of any real details, this does sound good.  It would also appear to be a move that could help place Blockbuster back in the game, that is, at least in terms of competing with Netflix.  Of course, the press release announcement did leave out some of the important details such as pricing, and we all know that could make or break a service.  Not to mention the press release also gave little indication of which phones will be supported or when the service will go live.

This sounds like a service that could have some real potential, but I will have to reserve judgment until we see more details.  If nothing else, it could hopefully spur some competition in the market and force Netflix to consider a similar partnership with a mobile company.
