Apple + Greenpeace = A Green Apple?

by Darrick Rochili on Dec 21, 2006 at 04:59 PM

Green AppleShould Apple go green? When I first read the title of that article, I was thinking more along the lines of Apple changing their main colors to green (apples = red or green, not black and white), and thought that would be a step away from the minimalist color design they currently have.

I was quite mistaken, as the article turned out to be about Apple’s battle against Greenpeace, who claim that Apple is using toxic chemicals in their manufacturing process, and demand that they clean up their act. According to its report on Apple, chief among Greenpeace’s complaints is the use of PVC, as well as poor recycling performance.

Greenpeace has started to publicly attack Apple with demos and other eye catching moves (such as making Apple’s NYC store green with flashlights) to get their attention, which haven’t seemed to work very well just yet—I haven’t been able to find any public rebuttal/press release from Apple regarding this matter online. But if they keep up the effort, I don’t think it’ll be long before Apple does something about it. They’re going to either fight Greenpeace or try to accommodate their demands and be more environmentally friendly. If that’s the case, I think my original interpretation of the article’s title should fit perfectly, use green as their main colours, since it will represent both the environment, and an apple.

Just because they have a recycling program doesn’t mean they’ve “Gone Green”

and just because Greenpeace said it doesn’t make it so does it.  The only green that GP is looking for is the color of money.  Jesse Jackson tried the same thing a couple of years ago with Apple and got nowhere.  Do you really think that Steve Jobs is not “green” and that he would give it to a shakedown?  The Greenpeace kids can yell, scream and pout until their faces turn purple but no way is Apple going to response to them.  Saying that Apple is the worst company is so outrageous that it defeats any creditability that Greenpeace might still have, which is not much by the way.
