Apple does not believe customers want a subscription iTunes

by Robert Nelson on Apr 26, 2007 at 03:38 PM

iTunes LogoAs Apple prepares to enter contract renewal negotiations with the major record labels there has once again been an increase in the speculation of a subscription service. The subscription model has been one that Apple has not shown to much interest in and recently Steve Jobs has made some negative comments regarding that idea.

“Never say never, but customers don’t seem to be interested in it,“ Jobs told Reuters in an interview after Apple reported blow-out quarterly results. “The subscription model has failed so far.“

While I do agree with the fact that the subscription model has not been to successful up to this point, I must also point out that it has not been offered by the one company that currently dominates the digital music market. While it does look like there will be some changes coming in iTunes within the next several months, I would venture a guess that it will be more DRM free music.

“We’ve said by the end of this year, over half of the songs we offer on iTunes we believe will be in DRM-free versions,“ Jobs said. “I think we’re going to achieve that.“

The DRM free music would be very good but a subscription service would also be a nice option. Come on Apple, listen to us and give us the choice.
