Removable hard drives are great, allowing you to take loads of files from one place to another, easily and efficiently with a reduced chance of you losing anything. However they do have a few flaws: they are easily stolen, and easily hacked.
So, what can a manufacturer do? Well they can’t stop you losing it (although coloring them something other than black, gray and silver might help) but they can make them more secure and that is what Levono have done with their new product: the Vault. As its name suggests, it is not about storage (although it does have 160GB/320GB) or about looks, it is about security.
It has a string of stringent safety features, making this (probably) the most secure of its type on the market. Its most obvious feature is the keypad. Although this may seem backward, it is in fact incredibly clever. So it would appear that they have done the trick, although only time will tell as to whether it can actually survive being stolen.
It is set to be released by the end of the month and comes in 160GB and 320GB versions costing $180 and $219 respectively, making the latter a lot better value for money. It measures 3 x 5 inches, so it is incredibly small, but does look a little drab and 1990’s-esque. It allows for 10 unique user IDs and one administrator, so it will be great for multi-person use. All in all it looks good, and should be a success.
