An open letter to the Verizon “There’s a Map for That” ads

by NEWS on Nov 3, 2009 at 08:09 AM

FROM APPLETELL - It’s not the size of your network that matters, Verizon, it’s how you use it. (I can use clichéd puns, too!) And your woeful selection of crippled phones really just doesn’t cut it.

that’s a lot of whine.  tivo past the commercial; it’s not aimed at you anyway.

You could’ve whined all that in just a few sentences…  Geez, we’re talking about phones here ;)

Droid does.  As soon as Android is released to the masses on Verizon Wireless’s gargantuan network, there will be thousands upon thousands of apps that will use Google technology. We all know that Google development is faaaaaaaar beyond Apple.  Apple just made the mistake of picking AT&T as a carrier.  At least they make a good mp3 player…

I stopped reading and skimmed the rest of the letter around the 2nd paragraph; way too long…

I have an iPhone 3GS and a T-Mobile G1; I love both- for different reasons.  I could care less about the carrier so long as I get a good data signal- which usually isn’t a problem in Atlanta, GA.  That said, I am leaving T-Mobile on Friday in favor of a Droid from Verizon.  (T-Mobile 3G doesn’t work in New Orleans or many of the cites in-between).

The iPhone is great, but AT&T service and support leaves much to be desired. When the iPhone looses exclusivity with AT&T I am sure you will see an exodus of subscribers headed over to other carriers; hence the current draconian carrier iPhone locks and overpriced phone plans.

Back on the subject of the iPhone; it is covenant, simple and it has a lot of Apps (the later is the only reason I purchased the iPhone).  Personally I prefer a phone I can ‘tweak’ and install all sorts of custom builds/widgets/add-ons- which the iPhone cannot do (hence the G1).  Apple may be ‘king of the app hill’ today, but since Android is carrier agnostic (currently on T-Mobile & Sprint, Verizon on the 9th, AT&T eventually) it could be a much different landscape next year.
