Analysts at Piper Jaffray have issued a report stating that they believe that 10% of all iPhones sold are destined to be unlocked, which is a pretty impressive figure and is sure to add fuel to the ongoing debate about Apples attitude to the hackers.

“In late September we spent 12 hours counting iPhone, iPod and Mac sales in Apple stores across the country,” analyst Gene Munster wrote in a research note to clients. “During our store checks we noticed many people buying iPhones in the maximum 5 per customer allotments, which we believe were being purchased to be unlocked and operated on carriers other than AT&T.”

Just how realistic is it for any company to continually disregard 10% of a market segment? It looks like New York is the main city for such purchases which isn’t a surprise given the tourist trade and the closeness to Europe.
