New Zealand man buys used MP3 player loaded with classified information

by Emily Price on Jan 26, 2009 at 05:45 PM

army classified mp3 playerA New Zealand man thought he was just buying an MP3 player at an Oklahoma thrift shop, but what he ended up with was much more.  When Chris Ogle hooked the player up to his computer he found it loaded with 60 files, all containing classified information about the US military.  Some of the files had to do with soldiers who had been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, others dealt with equipment that had been deployed to certain bases and mission briefings.

To top it all off, the player never worked for Ogle as an actual MP3 player.  He has said he would be happy to turn the device over to the US government if they asked for it, which, as of yet, they have not.

GoStereo headphones double as speakers

by Emily Price on Jan 25, 2009 at 10:12 AM

Go Stereo Speaker Headphones Here’s an interesting take on your traditional stereo speakers.  The GoStereo headset is a pair of stereo headphones you can use to listen to music off your traditional MP3 player or iPod, except this pair of headphones has a special twist, they double as speakers.  The headphones have external speakers on the back of each earpiece so you share your tuneage with those around you.

The “Tune In Tune Out” headphones run about $50, which isn’t bad given the face you’re getting a pair of headphones and a pair of speakers for that price.  It’s amazing no one has thought of this idea (or put this idea into action) sooner.  Having a pair of speakers on your headphones could be great for times when you want to share a track with several friends at once or even for times when you want to take your headphones off for a second, but still be able to listen to your music.

What do you think about these? Would you wear one of these on the regular to keep your gadgets charger, or is it too much?

Green House shows off new Kana Micro MP3 players

by Emily Price on Jan 20, 2009 at 10:20 AM
kana micro

Green House has introduced a new series of Kana Micro MP3 players that look like they’re USB drives.  The players have up to two hours of battery life before they need to be recharged (charging is done though your USB drive) and can store up to 2GB of music, although you’ll have to provide your own microSD card to do so.  Currently, you can pick one of these babies up in Japan only in purple, orange, green, blue, red, pink, and clear for around $16, no word on when of if we’ll see them hit the United States.

They look a lot like USB drives which will probably make them less likely to be stolen, but also more likely to be lost given their size.  2GB is also not a lot of music and providing your own memory card is pretty bogus.  What do you think about these?

Blaupunkt announces “World’s First” in-car Internet radio

by Emily Price on Jan 7, 2009 at 01:41 AM
BlaupunktRadio

Blaupunkt introduced the World’s First Internet Car Radio at CES.  The company partnered with miRoamer to create the radio which will give users access to a substantial amount of Internet radio content previously not available through an in-car stereo.  Dr. Gerhard Pitz, Head of the Car Stereo Product Center at Blaupunkt said “Integrating Blaupunkt stereos with miRoamer technology was a logical step in creating a truly multimedia driving experience . . . Drivers will be able to use all the features they’re familiar with, such as phone, address book, Bluetooth and navigation, but with the first Internet radio, driven by miRoamer, we are able to offer them the ability to tune into the world.”  The radios will be released as built-in original equipment.  No word yet on what vehicles, or when we could see the radios officially hit the market.  The image above is of a prototype which will be shown off at CES 2009.
