by Emily Price on Feb 1, 2009 at 05:52 PM

Philips Cinema TVIt looks like we may not be seeing Philips new 21:9 HDTV in the United States at all.  A spokesperson for the company indicated that the this TV would never head stateside.

The television incorporates Amblight technology around its borders and is said to be the world’s first cinema-proportioned LCD TV, meaning you can watch movies at their traditional aspect ratio rather than those formatted to fit your everyday television screen.  The television is expected to head to select European countries (Germany, Belgium, the UK, and France) this Spring for a price tag around 3,400 Euros.

Nokia 8800 Royal Edition

Sometimes you have so much money, you feel like you need to showcase your wealth to the world.  What better way to tell everyone “I’m filthy rich!” than to walk around sporting a pretty sub-par handset covered in gold and diamonds?

The Nokia 8800 “Royal Edition” has 1160 diamonds surrounding it with platinum plates on the front and back.  The company is only making 50 of these babies, so they’re bound to be expensive and oh so exclusive.  Inside all that diamond encrusted sparkly-ness is the exact same Nokia 8800 everyone else has.

Marantz shows off the BD8002 Blu-ray player

marantz blu-ray player

Marantz is showing off its new BD8002 Blu-ray player.  The company has described the Blu-ray player as “an-ultimate-quality reference standard High Definition source component,” which doesn’t make it sound all that sexy, although completely useful.  The player is only available with profile 1.1 (so much for that “ultimate” label)  so you can’t get the same experience as you could with a Profile 2.0 player, or BD-Live.

The player is the flagship model for the company and features 1080p HD video, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, HDMI 1.3a, DVD upscaling, and a SD memory card slot.

Acer releases Ferrari 1200 laptop

by Emily Price on Feb 1, 2009 at 01:22 PM

Ferrari 1200Acer has announced a new Ferrari branded notebook.  A follow-up to last years Ferrari 1100, the aptly named Ferrari 1200 has a 12.1-inch LED backlit display, AMD Turio X2 Ultra dual-core mobile processor, and can handle up to 4GB of DDR2 memory.

If you know much about computers, you know those specs are not really all that impressive.  What is impressive about the computer is the lengths that Acer has gone to embrace the Ferrari branding.  In addition to the Ferrari symbol on the back of the notebook, the computer has a carbon-fiber, anodized-metal touchpad that is supposed to resemble the car’s pedals, as well as a soft touch coating that resembles the car’s interior.

New Speak-ers look like speech bubbles

by Emily Price on Feb 1, 2009 at 09:47 AM
speech bubble shaped speakers

Novelty speakers are a dime a dozen these days, but this pair in particular is pretty amazing.  The “Speak-er” is for the most part your average run of the mill speaker, except it looks like a speech bubble.

The bubble measures in at 4 x 6 x 2, so it’s not terribly large, and is made of white ABS with a matte black steel grille on the front.  The speakers are expected to be released later this year for $120 for a pair.  There currently isn’t any information available about the interior specs of the speakers, but really, when you look like a speech bubble does it really matter?

Sony Ericsson announces the SE S001

by Emily Price on Jan 31, 2009 at 06:11 PM

Sony Ericsson S001Sony Ericsson has announced the Sony Ericsson S001.  The handset has a 3.3-inch AMOLED display and an 8.1-megapixel camera with a flash, autofocus, and smile-shutter control.  The phone is packed with features including mobile TV, high-speed Internet access, GPS, and Bluetooth.

Much like many other handsets on the market lately, the S001 is available in a few different colors: black, pink, and green with gold trim.  Do any of you have a colored cell phone?  It seems like offering the exceptional variety of colors would hurt sales of these electronics more than help them.  If you had your heart set on one of these in black, and then the store only had pink available for weeks would you still buy one?

Buffalo launches 7-inch USB LCD monitor

by Emily Price on Jan 31, 2009 at 03:39 PM
Buffalo 7-inch USB LCD

Buffalo has officially launched a new 7-inch USB LCD screen display for use as a secondary screen for your laptop or desktop computer.  The screen has a resolution of 800x400 and a contrast ratio of 500:1.  Obviously, you won’t be looking at great images on this screen with such a low contrast ratio.  At that resolution, you’re also not going to get a whole lot on the screen, but it could be nice to have around.  The screen connects via USB so you could pull it out to use on everything from your netbook to your mammoth desktop PC.  It could work well for keeping things like your IM client or Twitter while you’re working on your other screen.

No pricing information is available yet for this little monitor.  It will be interesting to see how Buffalo decides to price it.  If it was exceptionally affordable, a lot of people might pick one up just for the flexibility of having another screen available if they needed one.

Amazon may announce Kindle 2

by Emily Price on Jan 28, 2009 at 09:37 AM

Amazon Kindle 2Amazon has called a press conference for February 9th in New York.  The company hasn’t indicated what specifically the press conference is regarding, but rumor has it the company may be announcing the second generation of its popular e-book reader Kindle.

Amazon hasn’t held a press conference (in general) since November of 2007 when it announced the first generation Kindle.  The Kindle 2 was actually expected to be released late last year.  The device is expected to have a QWERTY keyboard, smaller page turn controls, and a thinner casing than the original model. The first version of the reader has done quite well, and while it hasn’t quite revived the e-book market in the way Amazon originally planned, it has sold out from their store on more than one occasion.

What do you think of the Kindle? What would you like to see in Kindle 2?
