BREAKING: Veoh shuts off service in many countries

by Zach Flauaus on Jun 1, 2008 at 06:19 AM

veoh

Apparently if you don’t have a lot of viewers in a country looking over your video site, you shut down their access. Veoh, a video site with content from FOX, CBS, NBC as well as YouTube videos, has blocked access to the site in several foreign nations. Andrew Baron, creator of RocketBoom, first posted on Twitter and his blog that access to the site has been forbidden in many nations around the world. At the time, Google News and Techmeme had yet to pick up on it. Veoh’s Wikipedia page now has a section for availability throughout the world, listing the countries that cannot access it.

CrackBerry gets a BlackBerry Kickstart hands on

by Zach Flauaus on May 30, 2008 at 06:59 PM

bb_kickstart

Apparently the legal department of RIM got to CrackBerry before we could and had them pull the pictures down, but at least we still have the pamphlet shots. The BlackBerry KickStart, RIM’s first entry into the flip-phone market, got a hands-on experience from CrackBerry and it seems as if they are pretty darn happy with it. The basics include opening the flip to answer the phone, closing to end it, seeing the caller ID on the outside LCD screen, and external music controls (as expected), but here’s where RIM comes in.

On regular candybar BlackBerry’s if the phone is holstered, the message will automatically appear once you pull it out of the holster. If there are many missed messages/alerts, there are multiple icons to display and you can also check alerts on the external display. The KickStart is said to be released with OS 5.0 and Bold owners will be able to upgrade to 5.0 when released.

Dreamhost: Use Gmail, not our servers

by Zach Flauaus on May 28, 2008 at 01:34 PM

gmail

Dreamhost users who have problems with your email server, you might be told to switch to Gmail. With the largest amount of support tickets being email-related, hosting-giant Dreamhost has started to recommend users use Gmail (or more specifically, Google Apps for Domains) as an alternative so they won’t have as many problems. Already having a strong track record, Google’s Google Apps for Domains is a very versatile platform where you can have your Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Talk, and of course, Gmail, all under one virtual roof powered by some of the most reliable servers in the world at Google. Dreamhost has made it easier for users to switch to Gmail by adding a button to use Gmail and it will automatically set up the accounts for you, leaving you with only having to set up the administrator account. Of course, Google Apps for Domains is already available for any domain hosted and/or registered anywhere.

Firefox 3 RC 1 has ten critical Flaws

by Zach Flauaus on May 26, 2008 at 08:49 AM

Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 users, listen up. Mozilla has stated that RC1 contains ten “high-priority” bugs, which have been marked as “critical.” Released almost two weeks ago, RC1 was thought by the developers as a possible final product, but now that these flaws are coming to light, the company is debating whether to release Firefox 3 Final with the updates or ship out another release candidate for further testing from the community.

“We are making a go/no go decision early next week, as we are still collecting feedback.”

Some of the bugs include certain websites crashing the browser, Ubuntu 8.04 breaking “3.0pre’s addons,” the spell checker once disabled is not able to be re-enabled again, and drag and drop bookmarks not being usable. These bugs could also be fixed, if RC1 is the final release, in 3.0.1 (which would essentially be RC2). The bugs are currently undergoing testing and by May 27, we’ll have word if RC1 is in fact the final release or if RC2 will be compiled and released to the public for another round of testing.

Want a Zune? Don’t go to Gamestop

by Zach Flauaus on May 24, 2008 at 06:34 PM

If you were looking to purchase a Zune at Gamestop, your luck has run out. The gaming retailer has decided to stop selling the Zune because “it just did not have the appeal we had anticipated.” Gamestop, apparently has changed their attitude because they originally started offering the Zune as a pre-order from the time of its release back in November of 2006. Microsoft seems not all that worried from the lack of support at Gamestop, Adam Sohn, director of marketing for Zune recently stated;

“We have a set of great partnerships that give Zune a strong presence at retail including Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart and others. We will continue to invest in retail partnerships and have seen good momentum online and at retail over the last few months.”

Even though they’ve sold two million Zune players already, that apparently wasn’t enough appeal for Gamestop to stay in the, err, game. Anybody else sense Xbox 360-syncing coming soon followed by a great sense of regret? While Gamestop has discontinued offering the Zune, they will continue to have them in-store until the current inventory runs out.

WiMAX, iPhone slammed by Japanese ISP Founder

by Zach Flauaus on May 24, 2008 at 09:10 AM

WiMAX Logo and Apple iPhone

So what happens when you combine a Japanese ISP Founder, the idea of an iPhone, and the idea of WiMAX together in a room? You get a fun-filled day of iPhone/WiMAX bashing! Sachio Semmoto, the founder of eAccess (a broadband provider as well as a wireless company) said that the iPhone is a “total failure” in the US compared to the number of phones sold by others (think RAZR). While he liked the functions, he doesn’t like it on AT&T (who doesn’t?).

“If I have a chance to talk to Steve, I’d like to tell him face to face: You made a wrong choice.”

In between shots at the iPhone, Semmoto also mentioned that WiMAX will lose the 4G mobile battle versus LTE (no mention of UMB?) and CDMA (the technology Verizon and Sprint uses) will fail on the way to LTE.

So… How many iPhones have been sold in one year? Such a miserable failure. And CDMA will die because LTE is not CDMA-based, it’s roots are in GSM. Ahh… Thank you, Mr. Semmoto.

ESPN’s Ultimate Remote in Person

by Zach Flauaus on May 23, 2008 at 12:50 AM

espn_remote

Because a Harmony remote just wasn’t enough for the world (among the millions of other all-in-one remotes), ESPN decided to come out with a remote of their own, and all things considered it doesn’t look that bad. While the specs have already been discussed earlier, the folks over at Zatz Not Funny have gotten their hands on the yet to be released remote, and to be honest, I’m kind of envious. The remote looks pretty slick, I mean, come on, what guy wouldn’t want a remote with Wi-Fi. And for those of you who aren’t a fan of the ESPN red color, it looks like you’ll also be able to get it in black. The cost is $299 and its still expected to be available for Father’s Day. For the wives out there reading this, if you like quality time with him, you may want to skip the ESPN remote.

Best Buy says no to the FCC’s analog TV fines

by Zach Flauaus on May 20, 2008 at 06:51 PM

Best Buy Logo

A while back the FCC started to issue fines to retailers that did not display signs on analog TV’s for sale that essentially read “This TV will not work in 2009 without a converter box.” Well, the first of the backlash has begin to come about and Best Buy is fighting back, claiming that the FCC has no power to issue these fines.

“Conduct that is accidental, or not known to the organization, is not willful,” Best Buy says.

Best Buy is refusing their $280,000 fine. They also said that the fines “demonstrate the unreasonableness, if not impossibility, of holding Best Buy to a standard of flawless compliance.” Whether their appeal will work or not has yet to be determined, but if this is even the slightest bit effective, you can better that other fined retailers will follow suit.

Alltel updates the Touch, adds Rev. A EVDO support

by Zach Flauaus on Apr 27, 2008 at 03:41 PM

HTC Touch

For those owners of the HTC Touch on Alltel who’s been just dying for the Rev. A EVDO update (and I mean, come on, who hasn’t?), your day has finally come. The already sleek Touch now has Rev. A EVDO capabilities for your browsing please. Rev. A introduces lower latency and higher upload speeds, along with a minor bump in download speeds. This makes applications like Skype or other VoIP/time-critical applications more feasible. The update also contains patches for Bluetooth connectivity issues in some wireless headsets and pairing with devices. Word of warning though: If you attempt to use this update on a non-Alltel Touch, you will brick your phone.
