by Indraneel Purohit on Jul 22, 2008 at 07:47 AM

Dell's offering a free Xbox 360 with XPS M1730 notebook

Dell is currently offering a free Xbox 360 Elite bundle with certain customizations of their XPS M1730 laptop.  Nice, huh? Yeah, well the only customization that offers this lucrative deal is the highest, $3000, package.

When you buy the laptop, you get a nice string of Xbox related accessories.  Those included are a pair of faceplates and two games. That checks in at around a $400 value, which is a great offer for those already considering a new laptop purchase and without an Xbox or even those wishing to make a quick buck (or four hundred) on eBay.

For those of you fortunate enough to be able to drop three grand on a laptop, you get a nice bonus as well, this offer is available through July 24, 2008.

TiVo gains YouTube support

by Indraneel Purohit on Jul 17, 2008 at 11:55 AM

tivo youtube

With the new 9.4 TiVo software update, it seems that everybody’s favorite DVR has gained YouTube support.  This brings up the total YouTube compatible devices to, uh, very high.  Subscribers of TiVo’s HD and Series 3 devices will get the update as soon as the next few days, and as late as the next few weeks.  Like the iPhone, YouTube on the TiVo is in the H.264 codec, meaning the TiVo Series 2 (which only supports MPEG-2) cannot use the YouTube application.

Check out the video (hosted on YouTube, where else?) below.

Denon unveils AH-NC732 noise-canceling headphones

by Indraneel Purohit on Jul 8, 2008 at 07:42 PM

Denon AH-NC732 noise-canceling headphones

Today, Denon, longtime audio goliath, has announced its first pair of noise-canceling headphones. They may be a bit late to the bandwagon, but the headphones sports a frequency response of 5Hz-28,000Hz, an impedance of 40Ω and a maximum power input of 100mW. For those not so electrically knowledgeable, this essentially means the headphones are purportedly very good and can cut outside noise by 99%. Only one triple A battery is necessary for 40 hours of noise cancellation goodness.

The AH-NC732 will cost $350 in Japan, but look out for this set to be available in other areas in the short term future.

Drobo 2 revealed, Firewire added

by Indraneel Purohit on Jul 8, 2008 at 01:57 PM

drobo 2

You remember Drobo, right? The “robot” that stores your data, from Data Robotics.  Well, its been over a year since its launch, and the makers of Drobo have decided to give their product a little update.  Today, the “Drobo 2” has been announced, featuring not one, but two Firewire 800 ports. The device also added a more powerful processor to support the Firewire ports and a quieter case fan. Data Robotics claims that the Firewire ports allow for two times the data transfer speeds, blowing other competitors out of the water. However, the Drobo still lacks any sort of Ethernet/Wi-Fi connectivity.

You can still get the Drobo for the same $500 price tag, and $900 gives you two 1TB drives; $1,300 gives you four 1TB drives.  If you don’t care for Firewire, the original Drobo is selling (until stock runs out) for $350 or $750, and $1,075 — empty or bundled with either two 1TB or four 1TB drives, respectively.

Netflix opts to keep profiles

by Indraneel Purohit on Jul 1, 2008 at 07:13 AM

netflix

As you can see from the message to all Netflix users above, the movie rental giant is keeping the profile feature on their world famous service.  When Netflix announced they were removing this feature, nerds around the world rioted.  When I say rioted, I mean purchased a domain name and began an internet petition. A topic which should sound familiar right about now, if you are following the Rogers/iPhone scandal. The protest also expanded to emails and phone calls, which shows the gravity of the situation for users.  However, not only have the nerds won, but Netflix’s cred will only skyrocket from here on out.

Google puts Gmail back in the lab

by Indraneel Purohit on Jun 10, 2008 at 07:59 PM

gmail labs

Google is genuine proof that companies do listen to their patrons. Google has thrown some Labs features back into Gmail, features that are experimental and may or may not be added to the “final” version of Gmail. The entire Labs idea is to harness the creativity of the Google staff.

Thirteen Labs features have recently been added to Gmail, all available to enable or disable in the Settings menu. The thirteen features are: Quick Links, Superstars, Pictures in chat, Fixed with font, Custom keyboard shortcuts, Mouse gestures, Signature tweaks, Random signatures, Custom date format, Muzzle, Old Snakey, Email Addict, Hide unread counts.

All of those are, more or less, self explanatory, but if you’re confused head over to your Gmail inbox and click “Settings.”  A neat little feedback is even provided, so Google knows what you like and don’t like.

Hopefully, Google continues this updating of their software; all their apps are in beta after all.
