Virtual Box; allowing Windows apps to run inside Linux

by Colbert Low Boon Leng on Mar 16, 2008 at 07:08 PM

Windows On linux

You love your Linux and Linux works perfect for you. But, sadly, most people will come across those files that they just need Windows to access. So, during some critical moment, you might need to reboot your computer to start up Windows just to open a tricky Microsoft office file or some other Windows application, which is just as frustrating as it looks. Now won’t it be cool to run Windows file seamlessly on your Linux? Yes it is, and you can do it now right away with your Linux OS.

You can do it by following a few steps at LifeHacker and you’re good to go with. The concept is using partially the same method as those Mac users who are currently running Windows on their Macs. This is called the Parallel’s Coherence, so users can have Windows apps running right on your Linux desktop and sharing the same desktop files. The process of doing so takes a little bit longer as compared to installing a Windows XP OS but you just need some free tools and a Windows installation disk and the best part is, aside from the Windows disk it’s all free!

Trying to compete in the arena of instant messaging, Facebook has announced that they’ll be launching their first instant messaging system. The Facebook team has been working hard, programming and testing the system. Rumors claim that the stable version will be launching next week for Facebook users to begin using and testing the new IM system. It is said that, unlike Windows Live Messenger and AOL or any other current IM system where you need to install software to enjoy all the IM service, Facebook users can web chat with friends on their Facebook pages as the Facebook IM is built into the user’s interface. Many also said that you will be able to log in into multiple IM platforms similar to web-based Meebo and other programs like Trillian and Adium.

Geico’s latest spoof, a new dating portal dubbed iHeartCavemem.com

by Colbert Low Boon Leng on Mar 15, 2008 at 01:47 PM

Geico's latest spoof iHeartCaveman.com

Geico has launched a spoof dating and match website called iHeartCavemen.com. It’s basically a mock dating website for users on the web. Other than those normal features such as photo albums and a user profile section, this portal steps out from other dating portals with its special features. Morphing is one of them and this is how it works, male site visitors can be morphed to look their best as caveman suitors. Other than that, for female site visitors, they can have a glimpse on what their cavebaby might look like. It also features an entertainment portal for video profiles and dates of the pining caveman. The tools are easy to navigate and with all the special additional features, this makes the iHeartCaveman site fun to mess around with for a while. This also serves as a follow up to Geico’s previous Caveman’s Crib that was launched just about a year ago.

nokia morph phone

Always bugged about the dust that gets stuck behind your mobile phone screen that you cannot get out? Well Nokia has just the thing for you. Nokia is out with a concept phone called the Morph which is definitely the cleanest phone ever. This latest concept from Nokia hopes to use nanotechnology to great advantage in a cell phone in order to give the phone a flexible body that has a transparent display and can be twisted around and reshaped according to the user’s whims. Even the electronics and the circuitry inside will be highly flexible so that this phone can be shaped and stretched into any form. You can even bend it into a bracelet to wear around your wrist or bend it into a tablet form so it can fit anywhere. This way you can even clean it up.

Sony Ericsson patents detachable phone

by Colbert Low Boon Leng on Feb 4, 2008 at 07:00 AM

Sony Ericsson Patent

Sony Ericsson has recently applied for a patent for what they have termed “Detachable Housings for a Wireless Communication Device”. This new idea which aims at loading a lot more features into a phone and still keeping it portable has two housings which can be detached from each other. One of the housings for the phone has the user interface devices such as the keypad, keyboard, joystick, touchpad etc. and others like the camera and GPS device while the other housing will have a display and a few user buttons and will house the battery and memory card. The screen is also meant to be detachable so you can switch it to whichever housing you’re using.

When you separate them, the housings communicate with each other through Bluetooth. The design has been conceived keeping clamshell phones in mind at the moment. However it is not limited to clamshells and can also be used on sliders. The housings have also been designed such that they can be put together in different ways such as the screen being on the inside or on the outside of the phone. Though this concept has potential and it could mean that you could keep the bulky part hidden away and whip out the other housing whenever you need it, I am quite doubtful about how practical it is. Whether it can withstand repeated removal and assembling and whether it is convenient is something we’ll know only after the brains behind this concept turn it into a phone.
