MP3 becomes official king of music
Since it became an official standard in 1991, Moving Picture Experts Group -1 Audio Layer 3 (or MP3) has proven popular due to the fact that it is easily transferable, good quality and cheaper than hard copies. So far it has been unpopular with record companies as a result of the close links it has to piracy, but recently Atlantic Records said that over 50% of their revenue was coming from digital sales.
Sonim XP3: The beast of all phones
When I say beast I do not mean in looks (like the iPhone), in functionality (like the G1) or low cost (like the Motorola Dyna 8000X). I’m talking about the height of practicality, a phone designed to suffer the falls, scratches and splashes that your average Joe phone would break merely looking at. This phone is not about looks, being small, or taking high resolution photos: it is the sort of phone you would expect to see on a building site, or on the top of a mountain. Let me introduce the Sonim XP3.
Panasonic makes a move for 3D Blu-ray
It is widely known that the future of Blu-ray is in 3D and a feasible idea for this was shown by Panasonic at the CEATEC show in Japan although it was pre-production. However they have now made a bid to be king of this future market with a proposal to the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association) regarding a way of producing two way (left and right eye) full High Definition discs.
YouTube goes widescreen
![]()
If you go onto YouTube today you may notice something different and although you may be a regular visitor, you could still not notice for half an hour like me. If you don’t want me to spoil it for you (assuming you didn’t read the title of this post) run off to www.youtube.com and see if you can spot anything different, but for those who don’t like a challenge, who are lazy, or never go on YouTube here it is…
YouTube has finally gone widescreen.
Blu-ray manages to not fail as badly as we thought
Blu-ray has always been fighting against the tide, struggling against high prices, general reluctance to move on from DVDs, and now the “credit crunch” as well. In fact, many people were beginning to think that the victory against HD-DVD may have been in vain due to the apparent lack of consumers, and that the aim of 5 million units to be sold this year was laughable. However it would appear that both parties are in the process of being proved wrong with figures released by Sony showing some interesting truths.
A good old fashioned way to keep your files safe
![]()
Removable hard drives are great, allowing you to take loads of files from one place to another, easily and efficiently with a reduced chance of you losing anything. However they do have a few flaws: they are easily stolen, and easily hacked.
So, what can a manufacturer do? Well they can’t stop you losing it (although coloring them something other than black, gray and silver might help) but they can make them more secure and that is what Levono have done with their new product: the Vault. As its name suggests, it is not about storage (although it does have 160GB/320GB) or about looks, it is about security.
Social networking sparks more trouble
![]()
Social networking isn’t all poking people and sending gifts. This is demonstrated perfectly in the case of an unnamed 14 year old boy from Canada who used Facebook to start a group with evil ends involving redheads.
Inspired by a South Park episode the boy (who we will call “John” to make things easier) set up a Facebook group whose aim was to encourage people to kick a ginger. This group was set up purely as a joke, almost as a tribute to South Park. However, it would appear that you can’t say anything these days without someone taking you seriously. The group grew to around 5,000 people, and a date was set to initiate this ginger-kicking-fest: the 20th of November.
The newest Green Supercar from Honda
![]()
The idea of having hydrogen powered cars is nothing new: the theory has been around pretty much since World War II. However, there have always been several flaws in the practicality of using hydrogen as a source of power. It is expensive and energy consuming to make it usable. Hydrogen is also not widely available, the batteries are bulky, the cars are expensive and they usually look horrible. So why has Honda made a hydrogen supercar?
The FC Sport revealed at the LA Auto Show is the pinnacle of design and hydrogen technology, combining the two in some environmentally chic blender in a way that has a product that can still classify as a supercar. This is, as Honda so aptly put it, “a glimpse of the future of the supercar.”
Bluetooth Boombench - share your music in style

This is one of those concepts/ideas/products that would work great in the perfect world and if people used it right, would be really cool. However this is the real world, and despite the undoubted merit in the idea behind this concept, I’m not sure it would work in the “real” world. Nevertheless I may be wrong and we may soon see these adorning streets everywhere: I am willing to be proven wrong. But what is it? This is the Boombench and it is pretty much what it sounds like.
Pretend for a second that you haven’t just looked at the picture, and imaging a modern, sleek minimalistic bench combined with a 80s/90s. Now open your eyes and see the epitome of minimalistic-cum-retro design: the aforementioned Boombench. Keep reading for more.
