Warner, New Line go Blu-Ray

by Danielle Riendeau on Jan 5, 2008 at 08:38 PM

Warner BrothersAfter the major announcement that Warner Bros. (one of the largest distributors of DVDs) will be going Blu-Ray only, Kotaku is reporting that sister company New Line will be following suit.

This news, combined with the fact that an HD DVD press conference scheduled for CES has been canceled, has many speculating that we can finally declare victory for Blu-Ray Disc in the high definition DVD format war. There’s no word on whether other Warner subsidiaries (notables include HBO and BBC) will be making the jump as well, but no one expects them to go HD DVD at this point.

Up until the announcement was made, Warner Bros. was actually the only major studio backing both formats. As of right now, only Paramount and Universal are still on the HD DVD side.

If this truly is the beginning of the end of the format war, then I welcome the news. Unlike the competition between game consoles (which results in higher quality products as developers fight over consumer dollars), technology format wars leave half of the early-adopter population in the dust and everyone else confused about what to buy.
