Gamestop claims Wiis are finally obtainable

by Jason Townsend-Rogers on Mar 25, 2009 at 12:49 PM

Nintendo WiiFor gamers, parents and non-gamers alike, obtaining a Nintendo Wii for their own usage has proven akin to searching for a needle in a haystack, meaning that it is worthwhile once said needle is found but locating it is extremely tedious.

Help is on the way, says various GameStop sales representatives. According to an article in 1UP, after three years of rarity, consumers can now obtain Nintendo Wiis with little difficulty.

This is a piece of news that will undoubtedly delight those who have had to do everything short of selling kidneys just to have the honor of owning Nintendo’s motion-based console.

1UP cites an interview with Bob McKenzie, Nintendo’s vice-president of marketing, in Gamasutra. In that interview, McKenzie points out that he has had some luck in finding Nintendo Wiis in stock at various outlets.

“I think finally we’ve gotten to the point where we’re going to be able to get a real good run rate on this thing,” he said.

Interestingly, in that same interview, he admitted to being surprised at the popularity of Wii Fit, admitting that “we weren’t sure if that was really gonna be successful or not, and to be honest I don’t think Nintendo really knew how successful that would be.”

Wii Fit, as Halo 3 fans should know by now, has turned out to be very successful, to the pleasure of fitness fans, but also to the relative chagrin of Halo aficionados, who might be understandably angered at the fact that their game lost out in totals sales to what amounts to a game that ships with a bathroom scale.
