Ah, yes, fellow Wastelanders. The time has officially arrived for Bethesda to finally open up the world of Fallout 3 and rectify the horrible mistake they made by allowing the game to actually end.
By now you should have survived the both Operation Anchorage and The Pitt, now its time to take on the last of the DLC challenges: Broken Steel. The new “expansion” (released May 5, 2009, for 800 Microsoft points) will add a side quest ranging from 4 to 5 hours long, will up the level cap from 20 to 30 and, most importantly, will allow you to continue wandering the Wasteland after you complete the main quest. Broken Steel will kick off right after you complete the main quest.
In the original Fallout 3 ending, we had three companions with us at the end that could take care of the final task for us. Only one of those three companions would man up and handle it resulting in a rather negative ending. The other two companions, who were obvious choices to handle the task, refused to complete your “destiny.” This is no longer the case and the task can be completed more rationally now.
Since Bethesda is upping the level cap, new perks and equipment will be available to compensate for the increased difficulty the enemies will present you in the Broken Steel content. New areas have also been added including the Presidential Tunnels. One of the new perks will even allow you to receive Dogmeat incarnates should your furry friend parish in the wastes and another turns you into a nuclear bomb should your health fall below 20!
In an interview with MTV Multiplayer, Pete Hines guaranteed us that despite Broken Steel happening two weeks after the main quest, previously available quests will remain available.
In case you are still on the fence about whether or not to purchase the new content, here is a trailer of the DLC:
