Activision Blizzard returning to E3 for 2009

by Brian Allen on Feb 4, 2009 at 02:07 PM

Activision Blizzard logo It’s no secret that the Electronic Entertainment Expo has been in a state of flux for the past couple of years. These days the companies that don’t show up for the event make as much news as the companies that do.

Conspicuous by its absence from E3 2008 was the world’s largest publisher, Activision Blizzard. In 2008 Activision discontinued its membership in the Entertainment Software Association, the organization that puts the event on.

Although the publisher and the ESA probably still won’t be exchanging Wii Friend codes anytime soon, Joystiq reports that Activision Blizzard will return to this year’s event.

That’s good to hear. A top-notch E3 is just good for the video game world and it seems someone at Acti Blizz realizes as much.  To not have the largest video game company in the world at the biggest video game press event in the world would reflect poorly on both parties.

In 2008 Activision held its own press event in a renovated church. Anything to prevent a repeat of that sad event is a good thing. As E3 continues trying to reinvent itself, it appears they’re going to be at least a little more lax on who they let in. Joystiq says two forms of industry ID such as a company credit card or paycheck stub will be sufficient to gain entry.  What, you mean limiting the crowd to a handful of jaded journalists with a high threshold for being impressed limited the buzz coming out of the event? Who would have known?
