Apple’s App Store downloads top three billion
Holy Guacamole, Batman - the app store (which contains applications for apple’s mobile devices iPod Touch and the iPhone) has hit (and now exceeded) three billion downloads. That’s a whole hell of a lot of useful “there’s an app for that” programs and indie games, no?
Overlooked themes in games
Upon reading this Kotaku piece on gaming’s next “hot destination”, I decided to throw on my thinking cap and come up with a few new ideas for game themes. While the piece in question deals with places - I’m all about historical periods and interesting events. That’s right, kids - it’s time to play with history!

Vikings:
Ok, so this is sort of hinted at in the Kotaku article, but imagine how cool it would be to play as a total badass viking warrior, either in a God of War style game or a more strategy-oriented title. You could pillage and plow through little defenseless villages and get back in your boat just in time for drinking songs! Heck, I could even go for a modern re-imagining of SNES classic The Lost Vikings.
Nintendo Unveils Its Video Game Lineup for Early 2010
Greek Mythology, Pokemon, WarioWare and funky new colors for controllers - it’s Nintendo press release time, kids! The big N has unveiled its master list for early 2010 games and accessories across the Wii, DSi and DS, and its a real doozy.
Square Enix opens beta testing for Final Fantasy XIV
Today (December 16, 2009), Square Enix announced the kickoff of the application process for beta testing on Final Fantasy XIV. Interested gamers should go over to the official website: Final Fantasy XIV to apply.
From the press release:
“By taking part, applicants will be one step closer to obtaining a sneak peek at one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2010, and the unknown realm of Eorzea.
FINAL FANTASY XIV is planned for simultaneous global release in 2010 on both the PlayStation 3 and PC (for Windows) platforms, with language support in Japanese, English, French and German.”
You heard it - head over now if you’re a Final Fantasy fan. By the way, I still can’t get over the use of the word “final” in one of the most prolific series in all of gaming history. How many sequels will come out before the fantasy is truly “final”? Inquiring minds want to know.
