Rumor: Battlestar Galactica coming to theaters

battlestar galactica original series record coverAccording to IGN, Battlestar Galactica may be heading to the big screen soon. Unfortunately, fans hoping to see the current Sci-Fi Channel re-imagined BSG in theaters will have to make do with the original series instead.

If the rumor is to be believed, Universal has negotiated with series’ creator Glen A. Larson to write and produce a big-screen adaptation of his original BSG series. The film will retell the original story and not be related to the current series. It is expected to include ol’ faves Adama, Starbuck, Baltar and Cylons.

Blu-ray Update: X-Men trilogy, Watchmen tie-in and digital comic coming March 2009

Tales of the Black FreighterJust in time for the big-screen releases, dueling comic book companies put out must-have Blu-rays of popular franchises.

Three weeks after the Watchmen movie hit theaters, an animated movie, Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter, based on the story within a story concept featured in the original Watchmen 12-issue miniseries back in 1986. Also being released in March is Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic, a two-disc collection of the original twelve issues of the Watchmen comic book series.

Competing company Marvel is releasing all three X-Men feature films as a box set to preempt the May 1, 2009, release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Rare restructuring its “current approach,” might involve layoffs

rarewareWith the current world economic issues affecting the game industry, Microsoft has now begun to clean its own house by trimming some of the supposed fat from its developer portfolio.

Microsoft has already shut down several of its first-party studios including FASA, ACES and Ensemble and now it appears Rare is restructuring.

the lord of the rings conquestConquest is, and wants to be, a Star Wars: Battlefront clone. Not only is Pandemic Studios the developer of this title (they were the studio responsible for the previous two Star Wars: Battlefront games), but Conquest borrows many of the same elements and characteristic of the Battlefront series. Unfortunately, if you were a fan of that series, then don’t expect the same thrills this time around with LOTR: Conquest.

Aliens: Colonial Marines pushed back, role-playing game possibly cancelled

aliens colonial marinesJapanese publisher Sega seems to have no love for the long-delayed, canceled and then reborn Aliens: Colonial Marines as it has decided once more to push the game’s release back yet again for a possible 2010 release, instead of its original Q1 2009 release.

Originally in development for the Playstation 2 back in 2001, the game was dropped by then publisher EA. In 2008, Texas based Gearbox Software reported that it was developing Aliens: Colonial Marines for all current-gen systems. Sega would be the publishers.

To date, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare stands on a hill of its own, selling more than fourteen million copies worldwide, dozens of Game of the Year awards and still in the top five played Xbox Live games on the market. Now, it is finally confirmed after more than a year of speculation that Call of Duty 4 is indeed getting a direct sequel.

Battlefield Heroes beta ready for redeployment

battlefield heroes returnsFans of the cartoon-style open world warfare-shooter, Battlefield Heroes will get the chance to continue the good fight as Swedish developer EA Dice is set to reopen its closed beta testing servers on February 11, 2009.

It has been just under four months since EA Dice originally shut down the closed beta for Battlefield Heroes, which was originally supposed to be released as a free-to-play download for fans of the popular series late 2008.

Master Chief-less Halo comics coming from Marvel in 2009

At this past week’s New York Comic Con 09 (February 8, 2009), Marvel announced that it will have two new Halo comics in store for fans this year. Neither of which will feature Master Chief but, instead, focus on expanding the overall Halo universe.

The first of the two planned mini-series, titled Halo: Helljumpers, is based on the upcoming stand-alone expansion, Halo 3: ODST (Recon), which will center on the elite Orbital Drop Shock Troopers that have regularly been featured in past Halo Xbox titles.
