Hawaiian Wal-Mart’s yank “Superbad” DVD From shelves

by Sue Walsh on Dec 9, 2007 at 11:14 PM

Superbad DVD

Wal-Mart’s seven locations in Hawaii have removed the special edition DVD of Superbad off the shelves after the mayor of Honolulu, Mufi Hannemann complained about the novelty fake ID that it contained. The ID resembles a Hawaiian drivers license and is in the name of the movie’s McLovin character, it includes a hologram that alternates between his picture and Fogell. Mayor Hannemann claimed that the ID sent the wrong message to underage teens and worried it would encourage underage drinking. Wal-Mart responded by removing the DVD set from all seven of it’s Hawaiian locations.

“We’re very pleased that Wal-Mart has taken prompt, corrective measures to comply with the City’s request to protect the integrity of our driver’s license. It was foolish of the movie studio to include this prop in the DVD, particularly because it could be used by unscrupulous people to deceive others who are unfamiliar with our driver’s license.

With computers and technology offering more and more ways to effectively create counterfeit documents and ID’s it surprises me that a DVD extra would be taken this seriously. It is a movie and it may send a questionable message, but if a store clerk were to accept this “ID” then I think that would be the real problem.
