Gmail’s new version has begun rolling out

by Robert Nelson on Oct 30, 2007 at 01:06 PM

New version for Gmail

Just yesterday we told you about new features that will be available in the next version of Gmail and it seems that version is here, at least for some lucky users. Similar to the IMAP rollout you may or may not be able to see the new version at the time of this writing.

If this is available for your Gmail account you will see a “newer version” link at the top of the page. The new version should offer a nice improvement with mail prefetching, an updated contact manager and a few other small updates. Some reports are stating that the initial load for your mailbox will take a few extra seconds, but those seconds are worth the time because of the prefetching for individual messages. With my Gmail account not yet sporting the “newer version” I cannot verify this myself, but at least I have the IMAP support.
