Gmail IMAP giving Windows Mobile users fits

by JG Mason on Oct 29, 2007 at 04:51 PM

Everyone was excited by the announcement that Gmail IMAP would be available.  I eagerly switched over from POP access on my Windows Mobile 5 phone and began receiving messages immediately.  A problem soon reared it’s head: some messages came in as headers only and some full body text.  What?

Thinking it was a setting issue, I deleted and set up the IMAP access again: same issue.  Turns out it isn’t just me:

  • Plain text email loads correctly

  • Rich Text leads headers only

  • HTML messages load headers only

Seems to be the case for Windows Mobile 6 and Windows Mobile 5.  The issue has been reported to Google who says, “we are working on it”.

Has anyone tested IMAP on Windows Mobile with Exchange? I’m not entirely convinced that’s it an issue with just Google since this works flawlessly with an iPhone. Does the server know what type of client OS is connecting? It should just talk IMAP and be OS independent. In other words, whether on Mac OS X or Windows, a proper implementation of an IMAP client should look very similar.

IMAP is a protocol. If your client isn’t functional, then you should first check to see if your client is written properly. I would suggest packet sniffing and checking out what is being sent and comparing with the RFC

This is the link to report the problem to Google. Whether the problem is on the client side or server side, I hope Google can fix it. It’s not going to get fixed if it’s a problem with Microsoft’s end.

This problem is definitely specific to GMail.

I use my Windows Mobile 5 device to connect to a number of IMAP mail sources, including MS Exchange, Courier IMAP on Linux and the IMAP service provided by my phone provider; they all work perfectly.

    Come on Google!

I too am having this issue with Windows Mobile 6.  Hopefully this will be resolved soon.

  • It’s good to see it’s not just me! I hope it’s fixed soon.

I dont believe it is a wm5/6 or mobile outlook issue. I have my work email syncing with exchange via oma, my isp email syncing via pop, my aim email syncing via imap and gmail set for imap. From my work account I sent one html email to both my aim and google accounts. then I checked my mail on my phone. The aim account has the mail readable and intact the Google account has a blank body. Thus it is Google’s issue. Wish they’d get it fixed.
