iTunes to slash TV show pricing?

by Natesh Sood on Sep 7, 2007 at 07:42 PM

iTunes

Apple has recently been trying to cut the prices of their downloadable TV shows in half, from $1.99 to just 99 cents. They began by talking to a few studios and networks about their current plan, however, this idea isn’t being welcomed by the TV industry.

Some believe that this new price cut is a result of the NBC and Apple argument, NBC wanted higher video prices otherwise they threatened to void their contract.  Additionally, many are against Apple on this because they feel that if it becomes 99 cents per show, then it will highly impact sells of DVD season sets. For example, NBC has sold their Heroes DVD season 1 set of 23 episodes for $40, now, if Apple could sell these shows for 99 cents, then you could basically buy the whole season for a mere $23.

Furthermore, some feel that major hits should not be sold for the same amount of non-popular TV shows, and if Apple’s plan fails, it is likely that there will be a tiered pricing system, such as 99¢ for library titles, $1.99 for current hits and $2.99 for megahits. An Apple spokesperson also declined to comment on Apple trying to cut down the prices.

Dropping prices is a good thing for Apple as many shows become available on the networks sites for free.  It is tough to be free, but 99 cents for the ability to take it mobile is a start.
