Google Moon anyone? Google have set up a $30m sponsorship, with $20m going to the winner, of a robotic race to the moon. To secure the $20m you must land a privately funded spacecraft on the moon and perform certain tasks. Should you manage this but only come second you get $5m.

Not at all surprisingly one of the tasks that Google require you to complete is to transmit high definition video images back to earth, which they will transmit.

According to Peter Diamandis, chief executive of the X PRIZE Foundation, he mentioned that the ultimate goal of the competition is to stimulate the development of low-cost methods for robotic space exploration. He said, “The use of space has dramatically enhanced the quality of life and may ultimately lead to solutions to some of the most pressing environmental problems that we face on earth - energy independence and climate change.”
