Paramount and Dreamworks now with HD-DVD exclusivity

by Robert Nelson on Aug 21, 2007 at 12:07 AM

paramount logoParamount and Dreamworks have again switched sides in the next generation format war. They had began offering HD-DVD only to later decide they would support both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. However they have just officially announced plans to drop Blu-ray and offer exclusive support to HD DVD.

The companies each said that the decision to distribute exclusively in the HD-DVD format resulted from an extensive evaluation of current market offerings, which confirmed the clear benefits of HD-DVD, particularly its market-ready technology and lower manufacturing costs.

The exclusive HD-DVD collection of movies will launch with “Blades Of Glory” on August 28th with “Transformers” and Shrek the Third” following soon. Granted most studios seem to have picked a side and stuck with it, however I do not think it should be a surprise that consumers are afraid to commit to a format when even some of the studios cannot make a decision.
