Free calls for life with Ooma VoIP

by Robert Nelson on Jul 19, 2007 at 08:36 PM

Ooma: Free calls for lifeOoma, a new VoIP startup seems to have a great idea to make the free calling system work. All you will have to do is purchase the Ooma box for $400 and then you will get free domestic calls for life. You will be able to call both regular landlines and also other VoIP users. International calls can be made but they will be charged at rates similar to other VoIP providers, still very low cost just not free.

The Ooma seems to have gotten this right because you can still keep your own number and still use a “normal” handset. Once the Ooma box is hooked up the system will take care of the rest. The calls made will go out over your internet connection and when/if that is down they will be automatically re-routed back, and emergency calls can always be made.

The Ooma system will work on a P2P system similar to BitTorrent, so it will need a system of Oomas in use.  Initially Ooma will be sending out 1500 units this summer to get started and then will follow up with an invite only system to get some more out to the public for use. Ooma will then open up in September with units available for sale to the public.
