$50 HD-DVD players, Walmart goes low
Breaking news: Taiwanese concern Fuh Yuan reportedly will make 2,000,000 HD-DVD players for retailing giant Wal-Mart. The Chinese site is saying (if you do the math) the retailer will buy these HD-DVD players for $50 each.
We know Wal-Mart has been hocking HD-DVDs for some time now and perhaps this is part of their plan to get the stock out the door. A low cost player surely could help HD combat Blu-Ray.
Another link from the AVS Forum says the price could be $299. I think this estimate is going to be high. I’d expect to see it on the shelf in the $199-$250 range. If the price is that low, this could be the tipping point in the public adopting HD-DVD…

Guys, the unit looks like it could be Blu-ray because according to several sights the Chinese phrase for Blu-ray gets miss translated into Blue light. And the source says Blue Light HD DVD. It could also be a miss translation of Blue lazer as well in which case it could be HD-DVD; however, as they refer to any DVD player that can be hooked up to a HD TV as an HD DVD player the truth won’t be known till there is an official anouncement.
on April 21, 2007 at 12:01 AM - LINKNo, it is not referring to Blu-ray. Many folks fluent in Chinese have confirmed that it is referring to “blue light HD DVD players”. In China they have red light HVD, so they needed to make a distinction so as to not confuse Chinese readers. Wal-Mart will have tons of HD DVD players this year for the buying masses.

on April 25, 2007 at 10:04 PM - LINKThe $50 figure is WM cost, not retail.
on April 25, 2007 at 10:07 PM - LINKJust letting you guys know that this rumor is false. Walmarts made a statement which isnt hard to find saying that the article was full of inaccuracies and false information. This rumor was brought over from the AVS forums and is inaccurate. If you dont believe me google Walmarts statement on this. They denied it and said they have no plans to buy the cheap players right now. So no $200 HDDVD players at Walmart anytime soon.
on June 19, 2007 at 07:42 PM - LINKI guess all of you were wrong. Walmart is indeed selling a $99 HD-DVD player.
