The world’s first fuel cell hybrid train was tested in Japan last week. The New Energy (NE) Train operated on two 65 kilowatt fuel cells with six hydrogen tanks and a battery and can reach a maximum speed of 100 kph (approx. 60 mph) and can travel about 30-60 miles before it requires a refill. It also does not require any power lines and only emits water. East Japan Railway Company (JR East), which conducted the test with 30 passengers, plans to test a train on a public track in April and have commuter trains regularly running routes in 10-20 years. After hybrid planes are invented can we finally get those flying cars we were promised?
