Xbox 360 HD DVD drive gets a price, Microsoft gets a pat on the back

by Doug Berger on Aug 15, 2006 at 06:29 PM

Xbox 360 HD DVD

Last week, Microsoft had a press event where they showed off the lastest iteration of the external HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360.  At that point no pricing was being reported for the device, but today Digitimes is reporting that it will run $200 and will be released by Christmas of this year.  In addition, Taiwanese game developers and gaming service providors are commending Microsoft for such a smart marketing strategy, which they’re hoping will give the console the edge over Sony’s PlayStation 3 and its Blu ray drive.  With the Xbox’s drive being external, it will likely allow the price to severely undercut the PS3 when it comes out later this year.
